Magic attendance sees sharp decline

When a team starts to lose, you expect attendance and TV ratings to drop. Winning teams make appointment television and only the die hards seemingly can sit through the slog of the final weeks of the season as the team plays these games out. That is not a surprise. The Magic expected this. Magic COO […]

USA TODAY: Magic to get own D-League team

“The Orlando Magic plan to enter a single-affiliation hybrid relationship with the NBA Development League’s Erie BayHawks, people familiar with news told USA TODAY Sports. They requested anonymity because the deal has not been finalized.”

Jeff Zillgitt of USA TODAY

The Magic have used the D-League sparingly as they have had to share their affiliation with several other teams. This year, the Magic’s affiliate was located in Fort Wayne, Ind.

The Magic have made it known they would like to bring the D-League back to the Southeast, possibly to Jacksonville. That will not happen most likely until another team moves into the region.

Zach Lowe picks Victor Oladipo as ROY

“Oladipo is a bulldog with long arms, and he has predictably fared better on defense. Real plus/minus paints him as a positive on that end, he can check multiple positions, and he has generated steals without gambling irresponsibly. The Magic have allowed six fewer points per 100 possessions when Oladipo plays. Those numbers are noisy, but it’s tough to find much evidence Oladipo is a big negative on defense.

He’s been turnover-prone on offense, but he has shot better than Carter-Williams from just about everywhere, and his midrange pull-up looks promising. Playing with at least a few quality veterans boosts that efficiency, but plop him on a roster as bad as Philly’s, and his counting numbers would likely be at least as good as MCW’s — with better defense. Oladipo has also played in 10 more games, which counts on the margins.”

Jameer Nelson on his future

“I do think about it a lot, but I don’t know what the future holds. I don’t know the plan. I just have to be patient and see that they are going to do because it’s the team’s option (with his contract).

“I would definitely like to stay with the Magic, but it’s a business and it’s up to these guys,’’ Nelson said. “I haven’t talked to them much about (the plan), so I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Jameer Nelson as told to John Denton of OrlandoMagic.com.

Nelson is slated to make $8 million next season, but only $2 million of that contract is guaranteed. According to ShamSports, the Magic have until July 15, 2014 to either keep Nelson and guarantee the full amount or cut him and pay only $2 million. Despite Nelson’s longevity with the team and his solid play as a passer this year — he is ninth in the league with 7.0 assists per game — it is uncertain whether the Magic will move on and turn the reigns over to Victor Oladipo as point guard or whomever they draft.

Homeward bound: Magic complete road season

If we never have to see the blue or black Magic jerseys again, it would certainly be a good thing. Nothing excuses a 4-37 road record. Not youth. Not talent. Not whatever excuse you can come up with. The Magic completed the franchise’s worst road season with a 108-95 loss to the Bulls at United […]

Heading toward the end, Nets dispose of Magic

The light is at the end of the tunnel. Everyone seems to recognize that, even Jacque Vaughn as he decided (at long last) to let a decent lineup ride toward the end of the fourth quarter even though it meant playing the same lineup for the entire fourth quarter (a bench lineup at that), making […]

Re-Drafting the 2012 Draft

Unbeknownst to them at the time, the 2012 NBA Draft actually turned out to be a pretty important for the Magic. At the time, they still had Dwight Howard and just two picks in the draft. There was still an uncertain future. And there was a very uncertain and shaky general manager. Rob Hennigan had […]

Marcin Gortat evaluates Magic at paintball

“During the offseason, Gortat often works out alongside current Magic players and occasionally plays pickup basketball with them, too.

Once, Gortat even invited a few Magic players to a paintball game.

Who’s the best paintball player?

‘Hands-down me,” Gortat answered, smiling. “Out of them, probably Moe Harkless. Kyle [O'Quinn] was dying all the time.’”

Wizards outmuscle Magic in physical fourth

Good teams find a way to win games. It does not matter how bad they play or what mistakes they are making, they find a way to compete and they find a way to win. Washington might not be at that level yet, but against Orlando — a team with the third worst record in […]
