The Orlando Magic are not going to let Devyn Marble go without getting some value, it would appear. The team is set to acquire C.J. Wilcox for Marble.

The Orlando Magic will trade Devyn Marble to the Los Angeles Clippers along with a 2020 second round pick for C.J. Wilcox instead of cutting Marble outright, Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports. The team has until July 15 (Friday) before Marble’s contract becomes guaranteed.

Robbins reported earlier this week the Magic were planning to cut Marble. He would be owed $980,431 if he remains on the roster past Friday night. The Magic had apparently decided to move on from him as a player. He struggled to get consistent minutes and get out from the end of the bench.

This opportunity for a trade and to get something in return though appeared to have emerged Thursday and the Magic began pursuing that avenue.

Orlando has been connected to C.J. Wilcox before in trade rumors. It appears the team finally found a deal it liked to acquire the third-year guard from Washington who was the 28th pick in the 2014 Draft.

Wilcox too has struggled to find much playing time. In his career, he has appeared in just 44 games, scoring 111 total points in his career. He has posted a 48.1 percent career effective field goal percentage.

He is a better 3-point shooter than Marble, but has not had much time to cultivate his shot. The rationale for the Magic appears to be that his 3-point shooting was valuable enough to give up a second round pick to the Clippers to acquire — trading Marble would be necessary since the Magic are close to being over the cap and would have to cut salary in order to fit Wilcox in.

It still seems very likely the Clippers will cut Marble before the deadline Friday to save a little bit of cash.

Wilcox is owed $1.2 million in the third year of his rookie contract. The Magic will hold a team option on the fourth year (the 2018 season) before he would be eligible for restricted free agency in the summer of 2018.

It seems Orlando here is simply taking advantage of an opportunity to add a player of some quality. It is unclear how much Wilcox would be able to contribute.

Wilcox played five minutes of one Summer League game in Orlando last week before leaving with a hand injury. Wilcox left Summer League in a cast and underwent surgery for a fractured right hand. That will keep him out 4-6 weeks. He should be ready for camp.

Wilcox is simply looking for a chance. He 21 games last year in the D-League with Canton and Bakersfield, averaging 18.6 points per game and shooting better than 40 percent from the floor. He certainly seems capable of putting up big numbers.

Only time will tell if he can get minutes in a rotation that already has some depth with Evan Fournier, Jodie Meeks and Mario Hezonja all in line to play shooting guard.

The Magic appeared to take a player they were ready to let go and got a player they are at least interested in, even if it add s a little bit more money to their payroll.
