Devyn Marble did not have a ton of expectations entering his rookie season. He largely fulfilled his role, but hardly guaranteed himself a future.

Not a whole lot was expected from Devyn Marble when the Orlando Magic acquired him on Draft Night last year. He was the secondary piece, it seemed, in the Arron AfflaloEvan Fournier trade. Certainly, Orlando directed Denver to take him and so Marble was something of their man.

Marble was the star at Iowa, but it was never a comfortable fit. He was the best player on a solid team.

He had a lot of the “Jack of All Trades, Master of None” in him. He was not a good enough scorer to have the ball in his hands too much, not a good enough shooter to be a spread-the-floor guy. His defense was nothing special at Iowa, but it was good enough that he could develop into a solid player on that end.

Marble showed in his Summer League tour with Orlando that he could be an interesting contributor to the Magic if he developed the right way.

His rookie year was going to be an experiment. He would be bouncing between the D-League and the Magic throughout the year. Some stretches he would play a lot, some stretches he would not play at all.

This was all to be expected.

In the end, Marble accomplished what he could this season. He showed enough to suggest he can be a contributor on the team, earning him another chance to prove himself in Summer League and in training camp as he seeks out a roster spot.
