Maybe I am still deluding myself or looking for the best possible outcome for the Magic in looking at my predictions, but in my first published mock draft for Crossover Chronicles, I have the Magic selecting Dante Exum still with the fourth overall pick in the Draft.
I just do not see how the Sixers possibly could pair both Michael Carter-Williams and Dante Exum together. And I cannot see why the Bucks would pass on either Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker for Exum.
In other words, Dante Exum:
Exum is obviously the ideal pick for the Magic. I believe so, at least.
The Sixers or Bucks could very easily take Exum and leave Orlando drafting the raw Vonleh or Randle. Exum is a unique talent, possessing a lot of speed and size for a point guard. The Penny Hardaway comparisons are a little much, but it is hard to argue when you watch the way he plays.
Granted this was recorded well before the Joel Embiid injury shook up the draft, but Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel in a mock draft podcast series with Warriors.com had the Magic taking Marcus Smart with the fourth overall pick:
I would later join the Warriors.com Mock Draft to make the selection at No. 12 for the Magic. I was fortunate that I did not have to explain much different. Even with Dario Saric on the board, I took Rodney Hood. He was also my pick in my mock draft:
Hood is a do-everything forward who has a knack at putting the ball in the basket. That goes from deep as much as it is on drives or slashes to the rim. He is not going to do a whole lot more than score. That is the big concern with him. But for a Magic team that needs everything and versatility, Hood would be a good fit and provide another guy who can create scoring opportunities.
The Draft is quickly approaching and this is all subject to change.
