Orlando Sentinel: Magic likely to play Brazilian team

“The Orlando Magic are in advanced talks to host a preseason game this October against a Brazilian professional team at Amway Center, the Orlando Sentinel has learned.”

-Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel

The Magic will not be one of the teams traveling overseas for regular season or preseason games as they had desired, but it does appear as though they will get to host an international team. That international team, according to Robbins, might very well be Brazilian league champion Flamengo.

The Heat and Cavaliers will travel to Rio De Janeiro for a preseason game this October.

Orlando though has long been a popular tourist destination for Brazilians and, as Robbins notes, the Magic have increased their presence and ticket sales to Brazilian tourists spending their summers (our winters) in the City Beautiful. Brazilian fans waving their famous flag were spotted often at Amway Center throughout this past season. This exhibition game will only deepen the connection between the team and the country and its basketball fans.

Orlando City Soccer played Brazilian superpower Fluminese last season and has scheduled another friendly against a Brazilian team for this summer. Orlando City’s owner is Brazilian Flavio Augusta da Silva and the team has tried to build a strong relationship with the soccer-mad Brazilian population in Orlando.

This just makes too much business sense not to have a game like this in the preseason.
