The Magic used their second lottery pick to pick the point forward Dario Saric from Croatia. He was a solid player and has gotten comparisons to Hedo Turkoglu because of his ability as a point forward.
Of course the issue is Saric signed a two-year deal with Anadalou Efes in Turkey and Rob Hennigan and the Magic will have to continue to recruit him — although it looks like the Magic will trade Saric to the Sixers for Elfrid Payton.
Saric was the best player available on the board. So the Magic got a talented guy and someone that will likely contribute to a NBA roster as a point forward.
We will wait to see what happens with Saric moving forward. The Sixers though wanted and coveted Saric and as he fell they made the Elfrid Payton selection for Orlando. Andy Katz on the ESPN broadcast reported the Magic had a long conversation with Payton and really loved him after meeting with him and watching him workout.
Payton was a great scorer at Louisiana-Lafayette. He averaged 19.2 points per game and shot 50.9 percent from the floor. Most of that came in the paint as he was only a 25.9 percent from beyond the arc. He had to carry a lot of the load scoring-wise for the Ragin’ Cajuns. It will be nicer when he does not have that load.
He also averaged 5.9 assists per game and 6.0 rebounds per game. Again, he had to carry the load.
Payton is a good defender too. He has a good body. Clearly the Magic are trying to build an identity based around defense. The offense will have to come at another time.
This was also a guy the Magic wanted. They are giving up a lot to get him. It appears the Magic traded their first round pick in 2017 received from the Sixers in the Dwight Howard trade to get this guy. No pressure on being the point guard of the future.
