Kyle O’Quinn teased that he would shave his beard in preparation for Orlando’s hot summer months. He is making good on that promise for a very good cause.
Tuesday, O’Quinn will have “little” Jalen White of Castle Creek Elementary School shave his beard to raise awareness for Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Central Florida as part of O’Quinn’s “Beards for Bigs” event. The shaving will take place at 4:30 p.m. at 807 S. Orlando Avenue in Winter Park and the public is invited to watch O’Quinn get his facial haircut.
O’Quinn is doing this as a call to action to all Central Floridians to become big brothers with Big Brothers, Big Sisters. According the Magic’s community press release, more than 70 percent of children waiting for “bigs” in the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program are boys. O’Quinn is offering all men who sign up to mentor a child from May through August the opportunity to be a special guest with him at a future Magic game and take an on-court photo with him after the game.
Men (and women, I guess, because Big Sisters are important too) can sign up and get more information by visiting the Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Central Florida’s Web site.
O’Quinn has been well-known for his beard, often called one of the best in the NBA. But if shaving it is what it takes to get more mentors for young men in the Central Florida area in need of a mentor, that is what it takes.
