Victor Oladipo is the early favorite to win the 2014 Rookie of the Year as ESPN's Summer Forecast series rolls on. ESPN's panel of writers, who earlier predicted the Magic to finish 14th in the Eastern Conference, selected the top five rookies and had Oladipo as their top guy.
Oladipo was the second overall pick in the Draft and was seen as a guy who would fit the culture Rob Hennigan is trying to build in Orlando. It was not much of a surprise as everyone suspected Oladipo or Ben McLemore, who became the seventh pick to the Kings, were the favorites for that pick.
What was a surprise, and could derail Oladipo's Rookie of the Year bid, was when the Magic opted to play Oladipo at point guard during Summer League. This was a position Oladipo admitted he had never played before. But Oladipo performed well and impressed many with his tenacious defense, energy and scoring ability in the five game Summer League run.
The defense and energy were not a surprise. That is what Oladipo is all about and what made him such a high draft pick. The shooting ability was the surprise as he had only come around as a jump shooter in his final year at Indiana.
Oladipo is expected to come off the bench at the beginning of the season, playing behind Arron Afflalo and Jameer Nelson.
