Glen Davis likely done for the season

Al Bello/Getty Images/Bleacher ReportThe prognosis for Glen Davis is not good.

Davis fractured his foot at the beginning of Wednesday's game against the Knicks and left the game. Leaving Orlando in a bit of a lurch once again without him. Davis was sent back to Orlando and will undergo surgery on his fractured left foot today. Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports Davis is expected to mis 8-12 weeks.

That would set Davis' return at March 28 at the earliest. That would still give him 10 games remaining in the season if he were to return. In all likelihood it means that Davis' season is done. There is little reason to play him and risk further injury for 10 likely meaningless games — only the ping pong balls may matter.

Davis had a fantastic season turning in career-high numbers of 15.1 point sper game and 7.2 rebounds per game. He shot 44.8 percent from the floor, which is the second best of his career. He developed into a team leader and someone the Magic could count on defensively.

His injury where he dislocated his shoulder in mid-December was a turning point in the season. Orlando was sitting at 12-13 at that time and has gone on to lose 18 of the past 20 games, even struggling once Davis returned to the lineup.

Glen Davis was no All Star this year, but he was a solid contributor and someone who was not afraid to mix things up and — yes — take shots. The Magic needed someone just to duck his head in and try to create something, anything. Davis played that role. Sometimes to success sometimes not.

Orlando definitely will continue struggling without him. But the team will have to find a way.

It likely means Andrew Nicholson and Gustavo Ayon and Kyle O'Quinn get more playing time. They have the opportunity to develop and grow a bit next to Nikola Vucevic. That may or may not result in winning however.
