Looking Ahead: Heat Claim Best Odds for ’12 Title

Even as the city of Dallas is welcoming home its 2011 NBA champions, it is never too soon to start anticipating the next NBA season and which team will reign supreme (of course, pending any ridiculous lockout scenario).

According to TheSpread.com and Bodog, an online betting site, although the Dallas Mavericks took a 4-2 Finals victory last night over the Heat, Miami is actually favored overall to win next season’s NBA title with 2/1 odds.

Apparently oddsmakers sense that an additional year of camraderie and chemistry-building will help deliver Lebron his first championship.  Meanwhile, Dallas faces 7/1 odds to claiming a second consecutive crown.

Odds of the Orlando Magic winning its first title?  20/1.

As evident in the chart below, the current NBA championship odds are rather divisive, seemingly clustering the NBA’s 30 franchises into 3 distinct odds groupings.  The top group pairs the Heat, Mavs, Bulls, Thunder, Celtics and Lakers together, as the middle grouping joins the likes of the Magic, Knicks, Blazers, Grizzlies, and Nuggets.  Ten teams are clustered with 100/1 longshot odds, with the lowly Timberwolves and Raptors bringing up the rear at 300/1.
