Time to Meet Your Summer League Team

Orlando announced its Summer League roster today in preparation for next week’s AirTran Airways Pro Summer League. Draft picks Daniel Orton and Stanley Robinson headline the team which will included Patrick Ewing’s son, Patrick Ewing Jr. and several players Orlando invited from the D-League.

There are not a lot of big names on the team outside of Orton and Robinson and it seems highly unlikely any of them will make the roster considering the Magic are in “win-now” mode and looking to add veteran players through trades. But tell that to a guy like Wes Matthews of Utah who impressed enough to eventually earn a starting spot on a Western Conference Semifinalist. You work hard enough, you can impress enough to earn a training camp invite and then possibly make a roster.

The Magic have never really used their D-League team, but you never know if they like any of these players enough to send them down to Reno and have them as an option. Also, you never know who will fill in for Travis Diener, Marcin Gortat and Mario Kasun as the next Orlando Summer League legend. And you never know when Britten Johnson will embarrass a soon-to-be NBA superstar.

Orlando will open Summer League play Monday, July 5 against Indiana at 3 p.m. The Magic then play the Jazz on Tuesday, July 6 at 1 p.m.; then against the Nets at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 7; against the Thunder at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 8. Orlando finishes up Summer League play Friday, July 9 against Charlotte at 1 p.m. All games are being held at RDV Sportsplex and are closed to the public, but you can catch all the games on NBATV.
