Apparently, ripping Dwight Howard all week wasn’t enough. Now it appears Shaquille O’Neal got wind of Stan Van Gundy’s quote about Shaq’s flop (shown below), and he went on an anti-SVG tirade. ESPN has the story. Here are the highlights:
“I know for a fact that he’s a master of panic, and when it gets time for his team to go in the postseason and do certain things, he will let them down because of his panic. I’ve been there before, I’ve played for him.”
“Now I see why everybody who plays for him doesn’t like him.”
“I’m not going to just sit around and let nobodies take shots at me, and he is a nobody to me. And if he thinks he can get in a little press conference and take shots at me like I’m not going to [give] something back, he’s got another thing coming.”
Stan Van Gundy pretty much shrugged it off, as you’d expect him to:
“Whatever. I don’t know … that’s his estimation of my coaching. I’m not going to worry about it too much. Actually, that [Shaq's criticism] puts me in good company, very good company. He’s taken shots at Phil Jackson and Pat Riley, so maybe I should consider it an honor.”
Personally, I like it when Shaq takes shots at people (My personal favorite: Erika Dampier? Are we talking about the WNBA?), but he really is just coming off as a grumpy old man in these latest tirades. I’m not going to tell him to stop, though. Keep it coming Shaq.
