Magic’s youth hasn’t stopped them from winning close games

The Magic are one of the youngest teams in the NBA and their top player is a 23-year-old, but that hasn’t stopped them from being one of the best teams in the NBA during close games. That’s because, according to Kevin Pelton of Basketball Prospectus, there’s no correlation between experience and performance in tight contests.

In close games this season… Dallas 11-3, .786 Orlando 10-3, .769 Miami 13-4, .765 San Antonio 14-6, .700 New Orleans 10-5, .667

The article takes eight years of statistics into account, and found that the older teams aren’t necessarily better in the clutch. There was, however, a strong correlation between teams that win close games and teams that win the most games. So, the better teams tend to win the close games.
