Former Magic player Trevor Ariza ejected after cheap shot on Portland’s Rudy Fernandez

I know we usually stick to mostly Magic news on the blog, but I figured since the NBA world is already buzzing about this foul, and the fact that Ariza used to play for the Magic made the topic worth while. In case you haven’t seen it yet, here’s the full video from the incident.

The scrum resulted in mulitiple techincal fouls on both teams and the ejection of Ariza. I’m sure he’ll get suspended, at least for a game or two, but the way Fernandez looked as he squirmed in pain on the floor, the play could ultimatly end up hurting Portland more. I always like Ariza when he was with the Magic, and it’s clear that the Lakers got the better end of last season’s trade that brought Brian Cook and Mo Evans to Orlando in exchange for Ariza. Ariza has never been considered a dirty player, but when asked after the game if he would change anything about the play, his response was:

Looking back, would you still have handled the play the same way? “Yeah. Because it wasn’t anything I was trying to do. I wasn’t trying to hurt him. I was just trying to make a play for the ball. It wasn’t anything; I wasn’t trying to hurt him. I was just trying to make a play for the ball for my team.”

What do you think? Was this play dirty? Should Ariza get suspended?
