In yesterday’s Daily Dime on ESPN.com, Chris Broussard has a short story about Dwight Howard’s eagerness to take on the Pistons in the first round of the playoffs. Here are two of the most eyebrow-raising quotes.
“Hopefully, we play Detroit again,” Howard said earlier this week. “That’ll be good for us because we have to get over that mental hump. Those guys have beaten us two years in a row and they’ve left a bad taste in our mouths. So hopefully this year, it’ll be different.” [snip] “I don’t know what it is about the Pistons, but every year they seem to have our number,” said Howard, who has averaged 22 points and 15 rebounds against Detroit this season. “So to grow mentally, we have to step up to the challenge and beat those guys.”
Honestly, I totally agree with Dwight. If we’ve learned anything over the past 20 years, it’s that young teams have to progress year by year in order to win a championship. I know Magic fans are terrified of the Pistons, but as a non-fan, I can see that the Pistons aren’t what they used to be. They’re backing into the playoffs and at this point they probably won’t even up earning anything higher than the eighth seed. What do you think? Bring on the Pistons, or hope they stay in the eighth seed so the Magic can avoid them in the first round.
